Writing for European Science

A place for independent perspectives

We publish opinion writing that examines questions affecting research communities and the wider society around them. Contributions can explore science policy, scholarly publishing, research careers, innovation, ethics, communication and the relationship between evidence and public life.

We encourage work grounded in experience, close observation or informed analysis. A strong proposal makes its subject clear, explains why it matters now and gives readers a route into a complex discussion without oversimplifying it.

Who can contribute?

Researchers, students, communicators, editors, policy readers and practitioners are all welcome to propose a piece. We are interested in perspectives from across Europe and beyond when they add useful context to questions shared by the research community.

Contributors are responsible for the substance of their work. Publication does not imply that every view expressed represents the editorial position of European Science.

Contributor guidance

What helps a proposal stand out

Before writing in full, take a moment to frame the argument and the reader it will serve.

01 — Focus

Lead with a specific question

Choose a defined issue rather than a broad field. Explain the problem, tension or change that your article will examine.

02 — Context

Make the setting legible

Place the argument in its research, policy, institutional or social context so readers can understand what is at stake.

03 — Evidence

Support the analysis

Use relevant sources, examples and links with care. Distinguish clearly between established information and your interpretation.

04 — Exchange

Write for an informed public

Offer a constructive contribution to discussion and use accessible language for readers across disciplines.
